Educational Leadership Philosophy

"The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." --Ronald Reagan

For the past ten years, I have worked in higher education, and I have experienced many types of leadership styles, and I have yet to find a clear definition or technique that applies to every situation. While at NJCU, I have had the opportunity to work with leaders who are genuinely invested in their colleagues. This transformational leadership style can be very impactful. My colleagues have continued to inspire, encourage, support, and recognize my potential, motivating me to pursue this next step in my education and career.

I have seen the impact of great leadership, and my goal is to stay in higher education and become an administrator who listens and makes the decisions needed to support my colleagues and students while they learn and grow. Additionally, being a role model for my students is an integral part of my decision to become a leader who will encourage others to seek their success. Working on the HSI-STEM grant, I work with supplemental instruction leaders and summer research interns who I continuously motivate and provide the opportunity to visualize themselves doing great things.

Transformational leadership is a process that changes and transforms people (Northouse, 2019). The leader encourages and provides the opportunity to learn and grow to influence their followers to accomplish more than what is expected of them. Transformational leadership is concerned with improving the performance of followers and developing followers to their fullest potentials (Northouse, 2019). As a transformational leader, I must be aware of my behavior and how it will impact my team. Transformational leaders substantially influence their subordinates' job attitudes, motivation, performance, and proactive behavior at work (Steinmann et al., 2018). By becoming a transformational leader, I will work to build a positive environment for my colleagues and students encouraging productivity.

Joining the Educational Technology and Leadership Doctoral Program is a crucial step to reach my professional goal; there are many short and long terms I look forward to accomplishing.
